Who Are We?

Effex Landscapes is a new landscaping company based in Exmouth, East Devon that provides a wide range of landscaping services by the experienced owner, Mr Steven Fox.

After training at the Royal Berkshire Horticulture College in 1993, Steven received a National Diploma in Horticulture and since then has built up many skills and much understanding of what works and what would be good for your outside space. Effex Landscapes can offer you 15 years of experience in hard and soft landscaping.

How do you choose what you want?

When planning a new garden design with maybe a patio or decking area, the first thing to do is to work out exactly what you want from it. Will it be used mainly as an outdoor room when the weather is fine, with chairs and a table where you can sit and read, sunbathe, eat and entertain friends? If so will you want to include a barbecue? Will the furniture be movable or will it be built-in as part of the patio or decking?

Will you need space for children’s games, so they have somewhere to play on days when the lawn is wet? Do you want to include a washing line, so you do not get muddy feet trudging down the garden on winter days?

Once you have established these preferences you can start envisaging exactly what sort of garden design you want, in terms of both size and its features.

Choosing the best site is vital. Perhaps the back of the house is in the shade and it’s at the bottom of the garden that the most sun and best shelter is available. A timber or rustic pergola is an excellent decorative feature ideal for growing flowering climbers and giving a shady retreat.

Do you need privacy? Screens can be made from planting, walls or fences to cut out prying eyes from overlooking windows.

Ideally the design should tie in with the style of the house and when thinking about a shape maybe a rectangle does not need much thought, but by making slightly irregular shapes it becomes more interesting. Even missing out a section and filling the hole with plants will give instant visual excitement.
